FAQ

Why did you start collecting blankets for the homeless?
  • While walking out of a movie theatre in downtown Vancouver on a chilly October night back in 2005, Gregory noticed a man lying in an alcove at the side of a building. Always so curious, Greg went up to the man and asked him if there was anything that he could do to help him out. Thinking he would ask for food, drink, cigarettes or coffee, Gregory wasn’t prepared for what the man replied. “I could use a blanket… to survive the night.” Blown away by those words, Greg went out and brought back a blanket to that man in need. That act of that one offer has now continued and blossomed, from what was once a family endeavor to a Non-Profit Society which contributes to over 156 organizations in the Lower Mainland along with many other Churches, First Nations communities, and cold winter weather shelters that open their space to the homeless and families in need of help.

With this ongoing pandemic, is it safe to donate and give away donations at this time?
  • Blanket BC is committed to safety and have created new safety protocols that ensure zero transmission of any kind. We do ask that all donations are prewashed and placed in garbage bags. Once we have your donations, they are sent to an isolation locker (sponsored by U-Lock Mini Storage) for 3-5 days before we send them to shelters of families in need. All NEW items do not need isolation and are sent out to folks in need immediately.
What kind of items of warmth can I donate?
  • The most requested items of warmth are BLANKETS, SOCKS, SCARVES, MITTENS/GLOVES, TOQUES, PILLOWCASES AND SLEEPING BAGS.

Can I volunteer and is there an age restriction?
  • Anyone can be a Blanketeer and we encourage all ages to participate.

Please sign up at our Volunteer Page.

What's the contact number and email for Blanket BC?
  • Our phone number is 778-242-9940. Our email is info@blanketbc.org

Ben is so young, how did he get involved at such a young age?
  • Ben will be turning 17 years old in December, and from early on has always loved to help others. His parents always knew he was a caring and giving child as he gave up his own special toys to children at his first daycare. Ben is a very considerate young man, always thinking of others before himself.

How many blankets can I give?
  • As long as the blankets and articles of clothes have been recently cleaned, as many as you wish. Remember to keep a few for yourself! What we try not to collect is food (please donate to your local foodbank), jackets (unless they are fairly new and large), and pants. These items are often too difficult to give away.  What we love are BLANKETS, SLEEPING BAGS, SOCKS, SCARVES and TOQUES!

How do I donate?
  • During the winter months, Blanket BC will be holding large organized drives where you can drop off your donations. Between the drives, we can always arrange to pick up your thoughtful donations.  Arrange a pick up, please email info@blanketbc.org. Thank-you!

Can I donate money instead of blankets?
  • YES PLEASE! Although we are not able to give you a tax receipt (at this time), Blanket BC is set up to accept your generous monetary donations through our partnership with Charity Village. Just click the link! https://give.charityvillage.com/profiles/blanket-bc-society
  • For substantial donations, please email gregory.ould@blanketbc.org or call 778-242-9940.

If I donate money, how is it utilized?
  • This is a fantastic question! Any and all money raised or donated to Blanket BC is used for daily operating costs such as fuel (which is ridiculously expensive in B.C.), insurance, and office supplies. On occasion we will purchase blankets if specifically requested to as we often get better deals and discounts than the general public. Please remember, not one person gets paid at Blanket BC as we are volunteer driven!

How can we partner with Blanket BC and do our own blanket drive?
  • Call us and we'll supply you with a medium to large box with our logo on it. Once completed, we will come pick up and send your donations to the shelters in most need.
